EU AI Act deadlines and compliance timeline from 2024 to 2027 with key milestones

EU AI Act Compliance Deadlines & Timeline (2025-2027)

Compliance with the EU AI Act is not a single date — it is a phased rollout. Knowing the EU AI Act deadlines lets you sequence your work, prioritise what is already due, and avoid a last-minute scramble as the heavier obligations land. This guide lays out the full timeline and what each milestone requires.

For the obligations behind these dates, see our complete EU AI Act guide. The Act itself is Regulation (EU) 2024/1689.

EU AI Act deadlines: the timeline at a glance

  • 1 August 2024 — the Act enters into force, starting the compliance clock.
  • 2 February 2025 — prohibitions on unacceptable-risk AI apply, along with AI-literacy obligations.
  • 2 August 2025 — governance rules and obligations for general-purpose AI (GPAI) models apply.
  • 2 August 2026 — the bulk of the Act applies, including obligations for high-risk systems listed in Annex III.
  • 2 August 2027 — obligations apply for high-risk AI that is a safety component of products already regulated under EU product-safety law.

What is already required

Two milestones have passed. Since February 2025, prohibited AI practices are unlawful and every organization must ensure a baseline of AI literacy among staff who build or use these systems. Since August 2025, providers of general-purpose AI models carry documentation, transparency, and copyright obligations. If you have not addressed these, they are overdue — not future planning.

What is coming next

The most demanding wave arrives in August 2026, when high-risk obligations take effect: risk management, data governance, technical documentation, human oversight, logging, and conformity assessment. Systems embedded in regulated products get an extra year, to August 2027. Because conformity for a high-risk system can take many months to build and evidence, 2026 is not far away in practical terms.

How to sequence your compliance work

Start now, regardless of your latest applicable date. Build your AI inventory and classify each system by risk. Stop any prohibited uses and close AI-literacy gaps immediately, since those are already due. Then begin the heavy lifting on high-risk systems — documentation and management systems are the long pole in the tent. Organizations that treat 2026 as the deadline to finish, not to start, will be under far less pressure.

Beat the 2026 deadline.

Our EU AI Act Toolkit gives you the risk assessments, technical documentation, and management-system templates to build conformity now — editable in Word and Excel, so you adapt rather than start from scratch.
