CSA STAR certification cost explained

CSA STAR Certification Cost in 2026: The Complete Breakdown

CSA STAR certification cost depends almost entirely on which level you mean, because the programme’s tiers are priced in different currencies: Level 1 self-assessment is free, the Valid-AI-ted scoring of it is $595 for up to ten attempts, and Level 2 — STAR Certification on ISO 27001 or STAR Attestation on SOC 2, each with the Cloud Controls Matrix as additional criteria — costs whatever the underlying audit costs plus an increment for the CCM work, plus CSA’s own listing fees, which it discounts for corporate members and quotes rather than publishes.

For a provider that already holds ISO 27001, the increment for STAR Certification typically lands between $8,000 and $30,000 in the first year; for one starting from nothing, the ISO 27001 base of $8,000 to $30,000 comes first. This guide sets out the cost of each level and variation, how certification bodies and CPA firms price the CCM extension, the renewal cadence that decides the multi-year total, the CSA fees and the corporate-member discount, and the four places STAR budgets overrun.

CSA STAR certification cost by level
Level 1: free · CAIQ Lite: free · Valid-AI-ted: $595 for up to 10 attempts (free to corporate members) · Level 2 STAR Certification: ISO 27001 audit + CCM increment + CSA fee, 3-year certificate · STAR Attestation: SOC 2 engagement + CCM criteria + CSA fee, expires after 1 year.

CSA STAR certification cost at each level

Level / variation What you pay CSA What you pay an auditor Renewal
STAR Level 1 self-assessment Nothing — CSA calls it a complimentary offering Nothing Updated annually
CAIQ Lite Nothing Nothing Annually
Valid-AI-ted (Level 1 enhancement) $595 for up to ten scoring attempts; free to CSA corporate members Nothing With the annual refresh
STAR Certification (Level 2, ISO 27001 route) Associated fees, reduced for corporate members — quoted by CSA A certification body with STAR-qualified auditors: the ISO 27001 audit plus the CCM assessment and maturity scoring Certificate follows ISO 27001 protocol and expires after three years unless updated, with annual surveillance
STAR Attestation (Level 2, SOC 2 route) Associated fees, reduced for corporate members A CPA firm: the SOC 2 engagement extended with CCM criteria Listing expires after one year unless updated
C-STAR (Greater China) Associated fees An approved body against GB/T 22080-2008 plus the CCM Three years
STAR for AI Level 1 / Level 2 AI-CAIQ free; Valid-AI-ted $595; Level 2 fees where audited ISO/IEC 42001 certification for the Valid-AI-ted + 42001 route Per the underlying certificate

The Level 2 increment in CSA STAR certification cost

Because STAR Certification is assessed inside the ISO 27001 audit and STAR Attestation inside the SOC 2 engagement, the CSA STAR certification cost above the base audit is the work the CCM adds: mapping the organisation’s controls to the 207 v4.1 objectives, evidencing the cloud-specific controls the base standards under-specify — tenant isolation, virtualisation, key management responsibilities, interoperability and portability, the shared responsibility split — and the auditor’s additional days to assess them. For the certification route, the auditor also scores each CCM domain on CSA’s maturity model, which is management information rather than a public result but is time on the invoice.

Cost line Typical 2026 range (USD) Notes
CCM mapping and gap analysis $0 to $8,000 Internal, or consultant days; reusable for the CAIQ and customer questionnaires
Cloud-specific control remediation $0 to $25,000 Segregation evidence, customer-facing monitoring, SSRM documentation — the widest item
SSRM and CCM documentation $99 to $8,000 Template pack against consultant-written
Additional audit days — STAR Certification $2,000 to $8,000 per audit Typically 1 to 3 extra days at $1,200 to $2,000 a day, at Stage 2 and each surveillance; the auditor must be STAR-qualified
Additional engagement scope — STAR Attestation $5,000 to $20,000 CCM criteria added to a SOC 2 Type II; annual because the listing expires after a year
CSA Level 2 listing fees Quoted by CSA; discounted for corporate members Ask CSA before budgeting; membership can net out the fee
ISO 27001 base, if not held $8,000 to $30,000 first year See the ISO 27001 certification cost breakdown
SOC 2 Type II base, if not held $20,000 to $60,000 first year Scope and control count driven

All CSA STAR certification cost ranges here are planning figures, not quotes. Two rules govern them. The extension is cheapest at a scheduled audit — Stage 2, recertification or the annual SOC 2 — rather than a separate visit; and the attestation route’s one-year expiry makes its recurring cost higher than the certification route’s three-year certificate with surveillance, which matters over a three-year horizon even when the first-year figures are similar. Our guide to STAR Level 2 covers the two routes and who performs them.

The renewal arithmetic behind CSA STAR certification cost

Route Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Three-year shape
STAR Certification ISO 27001 Stage 1 + 2 with CCM; CSA fee Surveillance with CCM sample; CSA fee Surveillance; CSA fee Front-loaded; certificate valid three years
STAR Attestation SOC 2 Type II with CCM criteria; CSA fee Full engagement again; listing renewed Full engagement again Flat and higher, because the listing expires annually
Level 1 + Valid-AI-ted $595 or free $595 or free $595 or free Negligible; the cost is staff time to keep the CAIQ true

Where CSA STAR budgets overrun

  1. The SSRM was never written. The shared security responsibility model is the CCM’s distinctive requirement; drafting it during the audit costs days.
  2. Isolation evidence. Tenant segregation asserted in a policy is cheap; tested and evidenced across layers is an engineering project.
  3. The wrong auditor. A certification body without STAR-qualified auditors cannot issue STAR Certification; discovering that after Stage 1 means a second body.
  4. Scope larger than the product. Every service added to the STAR scope adds CCM domains to evidence and audit days to pay for.

Reducing the cost

  • Do Level 1 first. It adds nothing to CSA STAR certification cost: it is free, the CAIQ is the gap analysis, and the mapping is reused at Level 2.
  • Time the extension with a scheduled audit.
  • Choose the route by market, then let the renewal cadence break ties: certification for a three-year certificate, attestation where buyers read SOC 2 reports.
  • Check corporate membership — it removes the Valid-AI-ted fee and reduces Level 2 fees, and may pay for itself.
  • Reuse ISO 27017 work. The CCM and ISO 27017’s cloud controls overlap heavily; our guide to ISO 27017 vs CSA STAR covers the relationship.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CSA STAR certification cost?
Level 1 is free and Valid-AI-ted scoring is $595 for up to ten attempts (free to corporate members). Level 2 costs the underlying ISO 27001 or SOC 2 engagement plus a CCM increment — typically $8,000 to $30,000 in the first year for a provider already holding ISO 27001 — plus CSA listing fees that it quotes and discounts for members.

Are CSA’s Level 2 fees published?
CSA states there are associated fees for STAR Level 2, reduced for corporate members, and quotes them rather than publishing a tariff.

Which Level 2 route is cheaper?
Similar in year one; STAR Certification is cheaper over three years because the certificate lasts three years with surveillance, while a STAR Attestation listing expires after one year and needs a full engagement annually.

Does a STAR certificate replace ISO 27001?
No. STAR Certification is issued on top of ISO 27001 with the CCM as additional criteria, and STAR Attestation on top of SOC 2.

What does STAR for AI cost?
Level 1 is a free AI-CAIQ submission; the Valid-AI-ted scoring is $595; Level 2 through the Valid-AI-ted plus ISO/IEC 42001 route costs the ISO 42001 certification.

Where this leaves you

Budget CSA STAR certification cost by level: nothing for Level 1, $595 for a scored badge, and for Level 2 the base audit plus a CCM increment of one to three audit days, cloud-specific remediation and CSA’s quoted fee — timed to a scheduled audit, scoped to the product, and chosen between certification and attestation by market first and renewal cadence second.
